Sewing opens incredible doors for making quality fashion, however, the type of thread can make a lot of difference in ease, performance and look in your final garment. There have been countless times, when I like a thread, but it really had to be replaced, so I am writing best tips so you can be informed about the best thread for your project.
CHOOSING THREAD COLOR
There are an unlimited about of colors in thread, but it’s important to design a design palette when you are working with a design. Having a main color and a background color is a great place to start.
- Choose a strong accent color, like a brighter color
- Choose a complimenting background color like a darker color
- Choose a complimentary topstitch color — it doesn’t have to be the same, but should work with the fabric
- Consider the thread sheen and texture that will work for the nature of the garment, either to be conservative or a little more flashy
CHOOSING THREAD TYPE
Thread type brings lots of different opportunities, but also issues if you are careful. For instance, some threads are affordable, but you want to be able to work work with it to accomplish all needed stitching
- Cotton thread has low stretch, low sheen and is very plain in its appearance. You will want a medium thickness cotton when working with lightweight to medium-weight cotton, rayon and linen.
- Polyester thread is a true multi-purpose thread, a good choice for most projects. Polyester is tough, colorfast, stretchy and temperature resistant. It has a wax finish that allows it to slip through fabric easily.
- Cotton-wrapped polyester thread is tough with low sheen, and it good for most project
- Heavy duty thread is a durable polyester thread, but its weight make limits it on use for most garment sewn project.
- Metallic thread, or thread wrapped in an thin metal, comes in gold, silver and copper types. It will require you to change your needle however
- Silk thread is very tough, smooth and with sheen. It is perfect for use is sewing silk or wool.
WORKING WITH THE THREAD
After narrowing down the type and color of thread for your project, it’s important to consider the best match for your project.
- Thread should match the dimension of the fabric you will be sewing on
- It’s recommended to match the thread content, cotton for natural fibers, and polyester for synthetic blend fabrics
- The best quality fabric usually yields best results, when the project can afford
- With machine sewing, look for smooth quality strands that don’t twist easily and lack fuzz
